Jazmin's Bakery - Newhall, CA

Jazmin's Bakery / Panaderia in newhall, CA. I guess the owner is Mexican, since this place sells not only cakes, donuts and pastries, but also tamales, quesadillas, ojos, bolillos, etc. I don't know much about this area, but there are some Mexican supermarkets and restaurants around here, so maybe you can get good homemade tamales and other Mexican food at this bakery.

Hard to believe that I can actually get a donut ball for 10 cents in 2008. That's a really good deal.
None of the cakes had name tags, so I don't know their names. The taste was OK, for $2.50.

Tiramisu $2.50

I don't remember if the pink part was raspberry or strawberry.

$2.50

I think the yellow part was custard, and the white part was cream or something.

Izumiya - Hizen Nagasakiya Nagasaki Castella

Izumiya Hizen Nagasakiya Nagasaki Castella (sponge cake). When I saw this at Mitsuwa, I just had to get it. Because it says it's actually made in Nagasaki, Japan. I can get this without flying to Japan. It's a really soft sponge cake, a little sweet, but not like American yellow cake. Very elegant and melting in my mouth. Really good with tea. This castella was just so good. It was worth paying $4.49. There were 3 flavors, this one was honey, they also had green tea and ... I forgot the other one.

Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill fast food

We had a free fish taco coupon so we got food at Rubio's. This was my first time trying Rubio's.
My opinion is it's too expensive for the quality of the food. Their famous fish taco really sucked. I had one bite and felt so sick. That fish tasted horrible, just like some of the other fast food frozen fish. I thought the portobello and avocado combo was kinda weird, although I didn't eat the avocado since I don't like them. It was kinda messy. Don't order this portobello while you are on a date.

Anyway, if there's El Taco Llama near where you live, that's 100 times better than this nasty fast food.

Enchilada Plate $5.29
"Corn tortilla enchiladas covered with fire-roasted enchilada sauce, melted jack and cheddar cheese, sour cream, and salsa fresca. Served with black beans, rice and chips."

World Famous Fish taco $2.09
"Rubio's original Baja-style fish taco since 1983. Crispy beer-battered fish, shredded cabbage, mild salsa and our tangy white sauce."

Grilled Portobello $3.29
"Corn tortillas topped with toasted cheeses, habanero citrus salsa, grilled portobello mushrooms and poblano peppers, cilantro/onion, cotija cheese, creamy chipotle picante sauce and sliced avocado."

Caesars Palace - Roman Tower Hotel Room

Roman Tower hotel room at Caesars Palace. This is the older tower and this room didn't have a bathroom door. If you are staying by yourself, it would be fine, but not for us. Luckily, we were staying somewhere else too. Looks like some of the Roman Tower rooms don't have bathroom doors, so if you care about that, make sure they have it. Other than that, the room was fine. Of course, the Augustus Tower is much nicer and bigger.

Homemade blueberry muffins

So we made blueberry muffins. We used a recipe on the Daisy sour cream website and the reason is because we had sour cream and we wanted to use it. We didn't have time to go through all our cookbooks to find muffin recipes.

2 1/2 cups flour
2/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup Daisy Brand Sour Cream
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup melted butter
2 beaten eggs
1 1/2 cups frozen blueberries not thawed
1/4 cup cold butter
1/2 cup quick oatmeal
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Batter: Beat 2 cups flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, sour cream, milk, 1/2 cup melted butter, and eggs until thoroughly mixed. Fold in blueberries. Pour into muffin tins. Crumb Topping: Cut butter into small pieces. Mix oatmeal, 1/2 cup flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and 1/4 cup cold butter together with pie cutter until it forms small pebbles. Sprinkle on top of batter in muffin tin. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Serve hot.

Somehow, the topping was too dry, and to me, too much cinnamon taste. It wasn't a bad taste, I can eat it, but I know there are so many other better recipes out there. When I eat blueberry muffins, I wanna taste blueberries.

El Taco Llama

El Taco Llama, Mexican fast food in the Valley area. Another one of the Mexican places with food that I can eat. I usually don't like Mexican food and I can't eat it, but this one I can. It was actually very good. One taco for $1.25 with lots of meat in it, much better than Del Taco or Taco Bell.

Taco $1.25 x 2

The Palazzo - Cut

Wolfgang Puck's "Cut" at the Palazzo. It's a very popular place, we had a reservation, but still ended up waiting over 30 minutes. The waiting part always sucks, but we got a booth, great service and the food was delicious. So we were pretty happy with this place.

We both loved our appetizer: "crab and shrimp Louis". I ordered the kurobuta pork chop. It was huge, probably like 2 pounds, we shared, of course. It was sooooo soft. I basically don't like pork, EXCEPT bacon and kurobuta. I know, it sounds strange. Since this is Wolfgang's restaurant, I figured I could probably get really good kurobuta pork, and it was good. Very flavorful, and I can just keep going eating, never get sick of that taste.

My husband ordered the turbot, because he never had it before, and Gordon Ramsay always uses this fish to make his fish dishes. He loved it, but I wasn't crazy about it. Maybe just because I don't like to eat cooked white fish and, to me, it was kinda no taste.

Even though we were so full, I had to get dessert. So far, I've always had really good desserts at Wolfgang Pack's restaurants. We ordered the banana cream pie. I loved it.
